A few short weeks after COVID-19 shelter-in-place protocols went into effect, a dedicated team made up of individuals from different product lines across the company, mobilized. Applying our skillset to a new arena, we wanted to develop face masks that could be used company-wide without impacting the global supply of PPE for healthcare professionals.

Within a handful of months, we identified suitable materials, designed the form factor, developed testing methods to assess filtration efficacy, and began manufacturing face masks for Apple Retail and Corporate Employees globally. Even by Apple standards, it was a lightning fast turnaround — and in the middle of a pandemic, between obligations from our day jobs, and while adjusting to remote work.
